Turnstone Estates is delighted to announce that it has submitted a detailed planning application for its exciting new Seaway destination and family leisure scheme in Southend-on-Sea which will provide around 500 new jobs and a boost to the town centre economy of an additional £15 million per year.
The proposals include a state-of-the-art 11-screen Empire Cinemas complex with Southend’s first IMAX screen, a Travelodge Hotel, Hollywood Bowl, other leisure and restaurant offerings, a new public square and public car parking.
Southend-on-Sea Borough Council has had a long-standing vision to redevelop the site to contribute to leisure, culture and tourism in central Southend as set out in the Southend Central Area Action Plan 2018. Turnstone Estates hope to receive a decision from the Council on their £50 million proposal in Spring 2019, in line with the Council’s roadmap to 2050.
Tim Deacon, Director at Turnstone Estates said: “We are absolutely delighted to have submitted our application for the Seaway Leisure scheme to the Council. There have been a few delays in reaching this point, but this is a fantastic regeneration scheme which already includes great tenants such as Empire with IMAX®, Hollywood Bowl and Travelodge.
Seaway Leisure will create a destination family leisure scheme right here in Southend town centre and help protect and enhance the reputation of the seafront as a go-to destination for residents and visitors alike. I look forward to helping support and develop the Southend 2050 Vision through this £50 million investment.
We have carefully considered all comments made during the consultation period and have commissioned extensive parking surveys, which has resulted in a ten per cent increase in public parking spaces compared to previous proposals, to total 555 spaces across the surface and multi-storey car parks.”
Justin Ribbons, CEO of Empire Cinemas said: “We are thrilled to be announcing our continued investment in IMAX® technology as part of our newSouthend cinema. The inclusion of IMAX® further reinforces our commitment to providing the most cutting edge, immersive viewing experience for cinema-goers.”
Giovanni Dolci, Managing Director, Europe & Africa, IMAX Corporation, said: “We congratulateTurnstone Estates on its newest project and are delighted to once again partner with Empire Cinemas to deliver The IMAX Experience, which will transport guests into a film like no other cinema format can.”
